Charity and Non-Profit Marketing and Advertising: Easy Steps to promote social responsibility causes, services and events
Broadcast a charity, fundraising or cause may seem intimidating and difficult for anyone not familiar with basic marketing and advertising tactics. However, in many ways it’s no different than promoting any type of business or product. Here are some simple steps you can take to capture the attention of the public and the media:
- Build a simple press kit that includes a press release, a public service announcement (PSA), relevant photos, news clippings, and biographies. The press kit should be available in hard copy and an electronic version that you can email to people (pdf format preferred).
- Decide who you want to achieve about your event, cause or service and compile their information (this contact list may include members of the media, business owners, community members and anyone else you consider the added value).
- If you are a non-profit organization, to create a strong public service announcement and submit it to your TV and local radio and local newspapers (which should generally be submitted 30 days in advance. Make you know what the deadlines are for each memory PSA).
- If you put on an event, create and send invitations (by email or post) to your contact list. This should be done more than once before the event.
- Develop a social media campaign around your event that shares information with the online community target.
- Make sure your website provides all the necessary details.
These are just some things you can do to raise awareness and buzz for your next charity event or fundraiser. If you are tenacious and care deeply about the cause you advocate, you should be able to attract the attention you want by following these simple ideas.
